Volunteers on the teaching program in Tanzania will assist with the teaching of different subjects in Tanzanian elementary and high schools.

Volunteers will work in both community and orphanage schools. Volunteer teachers can teach English, mathematics, science, geography, social sciences, history, physical education, art and music.
Please note that Tanzanian government school holidays are in June and December hence school teaching will not be available during those periods except with private schools.
In this program, volunteers teach the classes on their own or assist the staff and teachers.

We will embark on projects that will not only be beneficial to local organizations, but also to our volunteers and maintain a productive and open dialogue to all. We will conduct regular volunteer satisfaction survey to monitor our performance and we will maintain our website as one of the main routes for providing information for interested volunteers.
Greenbelt Agency International (GAI) which commits herself to upholding strict ethical standards that ensures a positive and lasting impact upon the environments, communities, and institutions that we work with, will target beneficial and vital projects i.e.conservation, care and education and take directly to where it will be mostly needed.
We welcome suggestions and feedback on our services and take all comments seriously. Our organization deeply believes in making a positive and lasting impact upon the already named projects by providing placement opportunities whilst ensuring that ethical standards are met in Tanzania.

Note: Volunteers do not need to be a qualified teacher to join this program

Program Requirements

Volunteers has to be 17 years or older at the beginning of the program. Volunteers need to have an open mind and flexible attitude for working in a new and different environment. The volunteer should bring energy and enthusiasm to make a difference.

Project Location
Volunteer Projects are located in Arusha (and its suburbs of USA River, Ngaramtoni, Tengeru among others).

Why Use A Placement Service?

We have a solid and trustful group of local organizations that will guarantee serious placements.
With several years of experience,we advise volunteers not to trust unknown organizations for it is risky.

Highlights: Participant's Role: Participants who are native English speakers and preferably have some experience in teaching will be placed in an English Academy in Arusha. .

Location: All placements are in Arusha, and Moshi.

Accommodation and food

Volunteers are allocated a teachers’ houses on the school campus, or live with a host family or at the staff accommodation. Most accommodation is quite basic with some furniture and a small amount of cooking equipment. Not all accommodation will have electricity or running water, but it will be of the same standard as the houses lived in by the staff. Some food is supplied but volunteers should bear in mind that they are living within poor communities and will probably need to supplement their diet with extra food which they purchase and prepare themselves. This may work out at around an extra £0-£10 a week, depending on volunteer needs and the placement.

At the staff accommodation; early can start with basic breakfast of bread & butter or cereal/porridge, juices, and coffee. The main meal will be taken in the evening; this is like meat dish with pasta, rice, vegetables, salads, fruit, and bread e.t.c. We will cater specifically for any vegetarians. Lunch is a light meal. Drinks like water, Squash, tea, and coffee will be provided and drinking water will be boiled and filtered.

As far as feasibly and practically possible, produce can be sourced and brought locally to benefit the local community. If a volunteer has a special dietary requirement, we will do our best to accommodate them.
                                                                                                                                                                                             A Duty of Care

We will have a duty to ensure that all the members of the team have a fully vetted safe, unique and individually satisfying experience whilst under our care. We will appreciate the need for members to experience the wildness and cultural differences but at the same time remain in a safe environment.

Personal Development

We will be concerned by the personal development of every volunteer. Regular discussions allow volunteers to say how they feel and every person will be encouraged to contribute.

Safety and Support

A basic first aid kit will be maintained on site at the accommodation or on a project site if in one group. In the event of serious medical emergency, the casualty will be driven to e.g. Arusha International Conference Center Hospital, St Thomas Hospital and Mount Meru Hospital, all about 4 kms from home base.  Our home has a telephone contact with emergency services 24 hrs a day. Whilst on location away i.e. to a family host or school accommodation from home every effort will be made to provide the volunteer with an effective form of communication in the event of an emergency. A back up plan will be put in place in case communications go down- mobile phones or telephones. A vehicle will always be available to reach outside communication and the local town. Security will be provided by the local staff. There is a fence around the staff accommodation (volunteers’ house), and a security officer is on duty around the property all the time.

A vehicle will always be available in case of an emergency to transport injured or sick volunteers. If a volunteer were to be in a hospital for a period of time a member of staff will visit them regularly .The volunteer will pay for medical expenses such as these on their credit cards and then reclaim these expenses back through their travel insurance.  In an emergency and where evacuation by air is necessary, the insurers are actively involved from the start and settle bills directly.

Start dates

There is no need to have a TEFL or TESOL qualification to gain work experience in Tanzania. All we require is a good standard of spoken English.

You will find a warm welcome awaits you amongst our students around the town. Often their local teachers are very capable at teaching the structural aspects of the English language - such as the grammar - but do not use the correct intonation or pronunciation, because they lack the confidence of a native speaker. By providing Conversational English teaching you can greatly enhance the learning experience and the future prospects of hundreds of children and adults with whom we work in the beautiful country of Tanzania.

Often you will find that all you have is a blackboard and a piece of chalk in the classroom. Fortunately the main resource you have is yourself. The students will want to find out about you. They will want to know why you have chosen to come and teach in a school in Tanzania. Lots of the lessons will give you the opportunity to explain about where you live or your interests and hobbies at home.

Usually you will teach about 15 to18 hours of timetabled conversational English lessons per week. You will also need to take time to prepare your lessons, and mark your students' home and class works. Many volunteers choose to help out in other areas too, taking students for extra-curricular activities like sport, drama or music lessons for example.

It is a good idea to bring some of your own resources too, whether it is pictures of your friends and family or some postcards of where you live. Another great aspect of our organization experience is being able to sit down with volunteers and share ideas of what works best in the classroom.

teaching sports, drama, music and other subjects

You might want to help teaching sport, teaching music, teaching art, teaching drama, or another subject that you specialize in. You don't need to be a qualified or experienced teacher to join these extracurricular activities, you are sure to receive a warm welcome from the schools we work with who are so keen to work with our volunteers.

The schools we work in are generally poorly resourced but full of students eager to meet you and work with you. Whether you are teaching cricket in India or music in Mongolia you will find that students and staff will be keen to work with a new person from another part of the world. You will often find yourself as something of a local celebrity!
